latitude : A measure of distance north or south of the Equator. One degree of latitude equals approximately 110 kilometers (68 mi).^[2] Lines of latitude, also called circles of latitude or parallels, are the imaginary lines that cross the surface of the Earth in an east-west direction (parallel to the Equator) and measure how far north or south of the Equator a place is located.
